During a presentation I attended during my time in grad school, my professor said something that would profoundly alter the way I approach thinking. The phrase "Design everything" has had a profound and ongoing impact on my philosophy of design over the years. It has not only shaped my perspective on tackling projects but has also influenced how I visually depict the potential of each project's site through a combination of hand-drawn and computer-generated graphics. Through these visual explorations, I examine various concepts, aiming to blend client expectations with professional insights.
Employing the lens of horticulture adds an additional layer of purpose to my design work. Instead of treating plants as mere afterthought at the conclusion of the design process, I leverage them to influence the overall style, form, and functionality of my designs. While occasionally this influence is portrayed dramatically, more often it manifests as subtle yet significant detailing.
My fascination with the constructed environment has been lifelong. Witnessing a conceptual design that excels in both aesthetics and functionality is invigorating, and observing how people engage with such designs is truly inspiring. Putting design into action represents the ultimate challenge of determination and creativity. As Steve Jobs aptly put it, "It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
